After working on MOANA, Lin-Manuel Miranda and The Rock are basically besties. And Thank God, because now they’ve put their beautiful brains and bodies and bank accounts together to give us the Broadway production we never knew we needed–MILLENIALS: THE MUSICAL.
Okay, so it’s not really a legit Broadway production. And they didn’t actually write, produce, direct, or star in it. BUT they did pretend to be the masterminds behind the faux-real project in a spoofy intro to this 15-minute Youtube musical rom-com actually written by Scott Brown, Troy Guthrie, Erin Lardy, and Dylan Sachse, with music and lyrics by Sonya Belousova, Giona Ostinelli, and Scott Brown.
The resulting musical is bite-size by Broadway standards, but actually quite a fully-fleshed story for the Youtube medium. The plot follows a self(ie)-obsessed 22-year-old heroine, Krystal, and her hunky but social media illiterate neighbor Jack as they search for Krystal’s missing iPhone. It’s a pretty hilarious send-up of Millennial culture, lovingly skewering our more bizarro behaviors while appreciating all interconnectedness of our techno-savvy world.
