Wake up and smell that damn fine coffee, because it’s happening again. David Lynch’s cult hit Twin Peaks is hitting the air again next weekend after a 26 year forced hiatus.
The new Twin Peaks trailer for season 3 was released on Thursday, and it’s keeping everything mysterious, like always. It runs under a minute, featuring fast cuts on still or almost still shots. We hear a disturbing soundtrack that punctuates white-noise silence with a sound that seems to be a cross between a camera shutter and an electric shock.
Here is it:
The reboot is directed by David Lynch, just like the original, and we’re about the see the fruits of the director having full creative control. He is also acting again, as the deaf but lovable screaming FBI Chief, Gordon Cole. The series will also feature a slew of other old favorites in their original roles, including, of course, Kyle MacLachlan as Agent Dale Cooper, Mädchen Amick as Shelly Johnson, Dana Ashbrook as Bobby Briggs, and yes, even Sheryl Lee as Laura Palmer.
Even though we seem some of these faces for just a brief moment, they look as comfortable in their characters as the day the original was filmed. The 26 year gap between filming is apparent, with everyone looking almost the same, but significantly older, making them look eerily the same but different, like characters in a strange dream.
The series will be an 18-hour series, with the two-hour premiere debuting on Sunday, May 21st at 9PM ET/PT on Showtime.
And if you didn’t get enough with that short and sweet tease of a trailer, watch Entertainment Weekly’s video of the original cast explaining how Twin Peaks became the cultural phenomenon we know today:
