Rarely do we see ventriloquists on television anymore, let alone those who manage to get a standing ovation. Oklahoma native Darci Lynne Farmer and her fluffy sidekick Petunia auditioned for America’s Got Talent last night and secured her place as a real contender this season. Darci got into ventriloquism when she realized it was a way to overcome her shyness- if she has trouble talking to people as herself, maybe she can talk to people through a puppet.

Sweet and giggly Darci was pretty nervous but once it came time to perform, she absolutely killed it. Without moving her mouth or missing a beat, Darci (through Petunia) belted “Summertime”, which isn’t an easy song to sing even with your mouth open. Simon Cowell, whose jaw dropped as soon as that rabbit started belting, was shown earlier saying he was looking for something memorable and unique, and he told Darci he would remember her for a while. And she’s only been working on this craft for two years, I can’t wait to see what she’s capable of in five.

Judge Mel B gave Darci the highest compliment she could- using her one chance to hit “the golden buzzer” to overrule any naysayers and send a contestant directly to the next round. When she hit that button and the confetti came pouring down, Darci sobbed and so did we.

A lot of talented singers and dancers compete on this show but this talent is rare. It’s pretty refreshing to see a very young person excel at a skill we don’t see very often anymore, and she has a real chance of winning the entire thing. It’s a dying art but Darci might have single-handedly paved the way for a new generation of ventriloquists. Can’t wait to see what else she has in store this season.
