With a little over a month left till we witness Micheal Fassbinder’s take on Assassin’s Creed, it seems it may already be influencing the industry.
Ubisoft, the titan video game developer behind such hit franchises as A.C., Prince of Persia, Far Cry, and others is apparently in talks with Netflix to turn one of their titles into an original series.
This isn’t Ubisofts first run at the table, either. Besides the upcoming Assassins Creed film, they are also looking to develop The Division as a feature film, and who could forget (more like, who even remembers) that terrible attempt to adapt Prince Of Persia starring Jake Gyllenhaal. They also have some TV experience, having developed for Nickelodeon an animated version of their game Raving Rabbids for three seasons.
The truth however, is that video games appeal are rarely in their story lines, especially for a mainstream giant like Ubisoft. So unless Netflix is ready to produce shows about people trying to unlock their next sniper attachment, it doesn’t exactly feel like a goldmine.
Maybe they should go out on a limb and try something that doesn’t already have a massive guaranteed audience. Wouldn’t that be special?
