After what feels like forever, we have finally gotten our first real look at next summer’s “Ocean’s 8”. The teaser introduces us to Debbie Ocean, sister to George Clooney’s Danny Ocean. In a nod to the original “Ocean’s 11” opening scene, Debbie is being released from prison—and apparently ready to violate the terms of her parole.
Debbie is ready to steal a $150 million necklace at the Met Gala, and she needs exactly seven more people to do it. The ensemble cast features Cate Blanchett as her right hand woman, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter and Sarah Paulson. Though the trailer doesn’t give too much away, the team apparently includes a pickpocket, a tech guru, designers, knock-off jewelry makers, and a suburban mom.
Gary Ross also directed “The Hunger Games”, and he was eager to find another project that would shatter expectations about women. An all-female version of the Ocean’s franchise was the perfect opportunity.
“I just thought it was interesting to invade the terrain that always had an off-limits sign. That’s an important thing to do,” he explained to EW. “And it would be great to see all these women do something that had always been the province of men.”
And judging from comments on the trailer, many men seem to think that heist movies should be off-limits to women. However, the trailer and earlier teaser images have garnered high expectations everywhere. Just like last year’s “Ghostbusters” reboot, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the movie’s all-female ensemble, the refreshing plot, and the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a romance subplot.
As it always happens with trailers, we still can’t tell much about the movie. But in the meantime, we can get hyped for June 2018 and watch the teaser a few more times.
