This Michael Moore Tweet Will Give You Secondhand Embarrassment

Michael Moore is a documentary maker best known to the general public for Fahrenheit 9/11, and best known to me via Arrested Development making jokes about him (“Mom signed me up for the army just because the fat man dared her to.”). This past weekend, he popped up in the news again after inspiring an interesting conversation.

In a valiant attempt at feminism he tweeted the following:

It wasn’t long before Twitter called out the factual inaccuracies. Twitter user Jessica Hellis broke it down for him and her followers.

(Sadly and somewhat creepily, I only knew about “I don’t like Mondays” killer Spencer. I don’t know what that says about me.)

Hellis also explained why Moore’s initial tweet was harmful.

(I mean, we are better, but otherwise excellent point).

So Michael Moore’s point was a bit dense and ill-researched. He’s basically thinking at the level a freshman year dude in his first gender studies class. And much like the textbook he would have in his freshman year history course, he’s erasing the role of women throughout history.
