Get ready because spicy Skittles and Starburst now exist. Wrigley has just announced last week that Starburst and Skittles are releasing “Sweet Heat” flavors- a spicy rendition of the original fruity and sweet flavors.
The “Sweet Heat” Starburst flavors will include Fiery Watermelon, Strawberry Mango, Flamin’ Orange, and Pipin’ Pineapple, while the new Skittles flavors will include Fiery Watermelon, Flamin’ Orange, Blazin’ Mango, Sizzlin’ Strawberry, and Lemon Spark.
It is not surprising that Wrigley has decided to combine both sweet and spicy, due to the snack and confection industry where spicy foods are becoming more popular. Susan Whiteside, vice president of public relations and marketing communications for the National Confectioners Association told Food Business News that, “From flavors like honey sriracha to mango chipotle, confectioners and snack manufacturers both are increasingly turning to sweet to balance out hot, spicy or tangy flavors. We’ve certainly seen some of that in the candy industry before with Red Hots and Atomic Fireball, but this is taking those flavors to the next level and really experimenting with different heat sources as well as different sweet sources.”
If you can’t wait to taste the ~spicy~ rainbow, you’ll have to wait until December when they will be released. Prices will start at 99 cents for a single pack and will go up to $3.19 for the lay down bag.
