Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away is a feast for the eyes- the colors are bright and vivid, the movement in the animation is fluid and seamless, and the backgrounds are highly detailed.
So it’s pretty remarkable that someone was able to re-create something so intricate. Self-taught Japanese artist Hiroshi Ito re-created the gigantic and impressive piece of 2-D architecture featured in Spirited Away- Yubaba’s bath house.
He built this model entirely by hand:
And then he hand painted it!
He built the bath house using putty and some plastic he took from warship models.
“Most importantly, I am a fan of Hayao Miyazaki’s movies,” said Ito. He just wanted to pay homage to a gorgeous and iconic set piece from a great movie.
It’s not for sale but it does make appearances at conventions.
Just look at that detail!
That precision! He clearly poured his heart and soul into making it look like that piping system is fully functional.
At the moment, he is working on another tribute to Miyazaki by re-creating the antique shop featured in Whisper of the Heart and after seeing this incredible bath house, I am very excited to see what else Hiroshi Ito has up his sleeve.
