All those oil-on-canvas portraits you see at the museum were, at their core, simply selfies for the extra-determined and extra-wealthy of previous generations. People say millenials are self-absorbed, but at least we’re efficient with our vanity. 17th century bitches used to sit for hours and hours on end in the pursuit of a perfect likeness. If Marie Antoinette had had a smartphone, she’d have been a veritable Kim K–social media royalty.
That’s the concept behind Olivia Muus’s Insta/Tumblr blog “Museum of Selfies,” in which strategically placed arms and smartphones transform classic portraits into fire selfies. These old stuffy paintings suddenly become hilarious in a modern context–imagine historical and religious figures snapping beauty shots or recording group hangs on snapchat for social media posterity.
