Latinx artists took top spots for Youtube’s top music videos of 2017

Miri Malek December 14, 2017 December 14th, 2017

Even if you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s  “Despacito” more than a few times. It’s tied for spending the most weeks ever as No. 1 on Hot 100 (16 weeks). The rise of reggaeton in worldwide charts is evidenced by remixing, bringing hits like J Balvin and Willy William’s Mi Gente, remixed by Beyonce, to diverse audiences more familiar with her work. But this isn’t a phenomena we can just pin on Bieber or Beyonce’s remixing star power. It’s been a year of explosive power for Latinx artists, and the list of top Youtube videos of 2017, released by Youtube last week, goes further to prove this point. Latinx artists took 6 of the 10 top spots on this end-of-year list. And it’s not just Youtube. 7 of the 10 top Vevo videos were penned or performed by Latinx artists. Súbelo!!

Youtube is the world’s most popular streaming service, and Mexico and Brazil represent two of the three biggest consumers of Vevo (the third being the US). Latin American users account for 27% of videos streamed.  A recent music industry study pointed out an interesting trend shift: “we have an emerging dynamic where Latin American audiences create the hits and European and North American audiences pay for them. This is the new normal.”

Talking to Remezcla, music industry insider Isabelle Salazar commented on the worldwide rise of reggaeton: “I’ve been in the music industry 23 years, and I haven’t seen a Latino movement like this one. Not even close. It’s music for all Latinos, and it’s crossing over to Anglos and other non-Spanish speakers.”
