It’s that time of year again: when sadist parents exploit their children in pursuit of internet immortality via Jimmy Kimmel’s “I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Halloween Candy ” Youtube Challenge.
But beneath the light-hearted surface of this yearly prank lies a much darker psychological experiment: WHO ARE YOUR KIDS, REALLY? Are you actually a shitty parent? Will you look back on this moment and laugh fondly or years down the road will this mark the moment you first realized you kid was an asshole?
Because while some of the reactions are adorably angry or sad, featuring exclamations like “I don’t even want to look at your face!” or dramatic faceplants into the carpet, other kiddos get straight up abusive. Then, on the other side, there are the literal angels who accept their parents mortal sin with a smile–or even try to hide their tears so they don’t upset them. (Absolutely precious, but like…possibly brainwashed?)
Either way, it’s an enlightening experience:
These videos always make me wonder how I would’ve responded in this sitch, and I honestly have no idea? Maybe it’s better that way. Because while I was largely a gold-star child, I definitely had a secret asshole lurking within. I mean that metaphorically.
And as a bonus, this year Jimmy got in on the scamming fun with his own daughter, who just went trick or treating for the first time.
It was not quite the comedy gold we might have anticipated:
