Here’s Everything You Need To Know About The BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reunion

Crummy March 30, 2017 May 1st, 2017

In every generation, there is a Chosen TV show. It alone will stand against the critics, the flagging ratings, and the trappings of cliché.  It is–BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.

It sounds melodramatic. That’s because it is.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t true.  20 years ago, Joss Whedon’s BUFFY changed the TV medium forever, a genre-bending supernatural dramedy of such innovation, such excellence, that it basically single-handedly ushered in the golden age of television that we’re currently spoiled by today.

Can you tell I’m a fangirl?

Anyway, because the gods are good and ultimately nostalgic, almost the entirety of the Buffy cast got together for a big ‘ol reunion, complete with a group interview and Entertainment Weekly cover spread.

The gang is literally all here, sans Giles (who had a conflict with a play he’s starring in in England) and Faith (whose absence is as mysterious as her signature smoky eye), and they all have aged like fine, fine rosés–with the exception of Charisma Carpenter, who somehow looks even younger than she did in 2005. Clearly, she’s a witch.

During their interview with Entertainment Weekly, the cast ran the gamut of usual reunion reminisces and discussions of Buffy’s cultural significance–and potential TV future. Here are some highlights.

On Buffy’s emotional impact

David Boreanez (Angel): “When you’re going through a really horrible part of your life, like your teenage years, you feel alone. And Buffy was a way to tell the audience you’re not alone.”

Emma Caulfield (Anya): “It just touched on really basic human emotions, like a life blueprint. ‘I don’t have any friends. I feel isolated.’ Those sort of core human emotions.”

On its legacy

Sarah Michelle Geller (Buffy): “I’m so incredibly proud of what we all created. Sometimes you need distance to really understand the gravitas of that. I appreciate everything about that job. As an actor, all you ever want to do is leave your mark — you want to do something that affects people.”

As for the show’s potential future, while SMG expressed concern that a reboot might be impossible to live up to expectations,  Joss and others in the cast seemed optimistic about its potential for Gilmore Girls-style glimpse into Buffy’s present-day.

And now we bear witness to the fruits of their photoshoot.
