Maximilliano Onofre December 5, 2017 December 5th, 2017

A royal wedding is arriving soon! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged. In early November, Harry asked for Markle’s hand in marriage. The couple confirmed the engagement on Monday, November 27.

The love story

The couple began dating in 2016. It is surmised that they were introduced by Soho House director Markus Anderson at the Invictus Games. It was officially reported that they were dating in late October of 2016. Soon after, Kensington Palace confirmed the couple’s status but it was not until February 2, 2017 that the first pictures of them holding hands were published.

In September 2017, Markle gave her first interview about Harry to Vanity Fair saying “We’re a couple. We’re in love.”

Since then, the couple have been spotted traveling the world enjoying each other’s company. She accompanied him to sporting competitions and met Her Majesty the Queen in October of 2017.

The Engagement

The engagement was officially announced on November 27, 2017. However, a statement by Prince Charles confirmed that the engagement had happened earlier in November with the blessing of her parents.

The engagement ring was designed by Prince Harry himself, using a diamond from Botswana and two stones from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection. Cleave and Company, Court Jewellers and Medallists to Her Majesty the Queen assisted the Prince with the creation of the piece.

Soon after the announcement, the couple had their first-ever joint interview where Harry told BBC, “I’d never even heard of her until this friend said ‘Meghan Markle’ – I was like ‘right OK give me a bit of background. I’d never watched any of Suits. I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her. I thought ‘I’m really gonna have to up my game, sit down and make sure I have good chat.’”

Who is Markle?

Markle is most known for her role on the legal drama, Suits. She plays Rachel Zane, a lawyer. Outside of that though, Megan is a model, has campaigned for humanitarian causes. She was a global ambassador for World Vision Canada and has also worked with the UN Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women as an advocate. She is a graduate of Northwestern University, earning a bachelor’s degree with a double major in theater and international studies. While in college, she was a part of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

Location, location, location

The couple has already set a date and location for the wedding. The couple plans to tie the knot in the spring of 2018. Kensington Palace –who will pay for the wedding- confirmed the nuptials to be set for May. As of now, only The Sun has confirmed the date to be May 26, though the Palace has not corroborated with this statement.

The location of the wedding has also been revealed to be St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, outside of London. This is not the same location that Prince William and Kate Middleton had their wedding, but it has its own special history. The over 500 year old chapel has been the site of many weddings, most recently that of Prince Charles and his second wife, Camila Parker Bowles, in 2005. It is also the place where Harry was christened when he was three months old.

The Royal opinion

The Royal family is happy with the engagement, with the Queen giving her blessing for the nuptials.

In addition, Queen Elizabeth, shared her own message for the couple.

Prince Charles, speaking for himself and the Duchess of Cornwall also made their delight known.

As for Prince William and Kate, they have shared their excitement via Twitter.

The bride’s family

Markle’s parent’s Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland wished the couple a “lifetime of happiness” in their statement. They had already given their blessing to Prince Harry prior to the engagement and announcement.

The internet’s excitement

Reactions around the internet have been both positive and negative. While some are excited for the couple to tie the knot, others have taken to making racist, rude and derogatory comments. Regardless, the talk has not ceased since their engagement. Twitter, among other social media networks, has been active in discussing the wedding.

The sentiments of joy expressed by Twitter user @Khaleesi_Hodanwere shared by many.

Some, like Lin-Manuel Miranda are celebrating the news in a more relaxed manner.

Others are sad that their dreams of marrying Prince Harry are dashed.

Of course, some took the news in a bad way, not feeling like Markle was fit to marry the Prince

However, even comments like this did not dim the excitement. The news of this couple’s engagement has England and the internet in a flurry. From guessing what she’ll wear, whether she’ll be a citizen, and how whether Harry will keep stealing food from his brother’s fridge, the road to the wedding is just getting started.
