2 gangs. 1 abandoned warehouse. And quite a few guns.
Like, an actual fuck-ton of guns.
Such is the premise of Ben Wheatley’s FREE FIRE, a black comedy fully-loaded with free-wheeling violence, free-flowing profanity, and a fucking spectacular cast (Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, Sharlto Copley).
Set in 1970s Boston, the film’s lean plot is essentially just a grimly hilarious shootout between a bunch of gangsters in leisure suits. And from the trailer–it looks amazing.
On the whole, it looks like a rollocking good time by way of Tarantino-esque dark humor. Ben Wheatley already boasts a diverse body of work–everything from horrors like KILL LIST, to recent sci-fi Tom Hiddleston vehicle HIGH RISE, to episodes of DOCTOR WHO–but it’s interesting to see him get back to wackier (but still quite violent) comedy, à la 2012’s serial killer rom-com SIGHTSEER’s.
The film’s retro poster pretty much encapsulates its cheeky, gun-toting charm:
The film just screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, but the rest of us will be stuck waiting for a 2017 release.
